THE SELF-DEFENSE TRAINING CENTER
The Self-Defense Training Center isn’t a typical studio. It’s an immersive, real-world training environment designed to help people build practical self-defense skills that translate beyond the mat and into everyday life.
Located in the heart of Kingston, the space has been transformed into a realistic training ground — complete with environments you encounter in daily life, including a kitchen, den, stairwell, alleyway, backyard, and parking lot. This allows students to practice awareness, movement, and self-defense skills in settings that mirror real situations, not just open floor space.
Owner and head instructor Joseph Martarano brings over 25 years of experience teaching self-protection internationally. His focus is simple: help men, women, and families develop the confidence, awareness, and practical ability to be safer and more prepared in everyday life.

Our Legacy: John Perkins
We proudly teach within the lineage of Guided Chaos Adaptive Defense and the Perkins Self-Defense System — two globally respected self-protection methodologies empowering people since 1976.
Our instructors trained directly under John Perkins, world-renowned self-defense expert and author of Attack Proof: The Ultimate Guide to Personal Protection. John’s career spanned over five decades and included work as a Yonkers detective, crime scene investigator, forensic and ballistics expert, private investigator, bodyguard, and martial arts instructor. He was widely respected for his practical, no-nonsense approach to understanding real-world violence.
Though John passed in 2023, his standard of realism, adaptability, and survivability lives on through the instructors he trained. His teachings remain at the core of our training philosophy — grounded, practical, and focused on helping everyday people navigate real-world situations with clarity and confidence.
